There is a long history across the Afro-diaspora of Sunday being the day to gather, celebrate, and restore community. During the centuries of enslavement throughout the Americas, our people were forbidden from congregating, because gatherings could turn into organized resistance. When limited free time was finally granted on Sundays, it was justified as improving the "morality" of the enslaved. Our people used it for something deeper. Sundays became samba, batuque, slap boxing, capoeira rodas, markets, announcements, celebrations, and food. It was one of the few times a community could breathe together.
Soul'd Out Sundays restores that gathering. It is the weekly service of this house, with the capoeira roda as the vehicle: one hour of collective physical training and one hour of cultural study, so the body and the mind are trained together. Sundays rotate through a cycle that keeps the learning expanding, with guest teachers bringing specialized knowledge.
Capoeira was never just a game. It lived inside a larger ecosystem of music, food, language, spirituality, and community governance. Train only the movements and you lose the deeper intelligence of the art. Sunday is where the ecosystem is restored, even thousands of miles from where it was born.
